GARDENING!!
Well, it is that time of year again. I have violas already in bloom (johnny jump ups) and some more that are on their way to blooming. How the one that is blooming ended up underneath Mom's huge, um, bush/plant/flower/tree thingy is beyond me. We have no clue what the thing is, but are experimenting with it again. This past fall, we didn't cut the bark-like stems back and they are just bursting with new leaves on THAT part AND growing from the main plant too. We also broke off part of one piece, stuck it in water and it is growing roots. I am afraid that it is going to take over that whole little planting spot that I have been cultivating for Mom for several years. I have irises in the back, two different hostas, dianathis, the violas and forget-me-nots if I remember correctly from last year. I then try to line it with assylum (from seed), which never does as well as the store bought plants and last year, I had it growing in the cracks of the sidewalk, in some stray mud that had collected there, have no clue how that happened. Anyhow, it is a pretty shady spot after 11am or so . . . so, all those grow well there. And well, with the thingy growing there, it is blocking a lot of morning sun too. LOLI don't have ANY veggies out and am disappointed in myself. Usually I am more vigilant about them tilling it all up to at least start lettuce and radishes and onions and spinach. I don't know why I grow the spinach . . .Mom and I like it, but it takes SO much to make a little bit and last year, I let it bolt (go to seed). Maybe tomorrow, when Mom is off, we can get it done, which requires getting the tiller started.
I found some new tomato trays to keep the weeds down and away from the plants, making is easier to hoe, without tearing up the stalk. 3 pack for about 2 1/2 bucks. Need to get some seeds too, now that I think about it . . . glad I don't have any warm weather plants out, it has been very cold past couple of nights, but my lettuce and spinach would be really thriving.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Got the huge corner pots ready for the morning glories that I am going to try to grow for mom. Joey helped me fill them with some rock in the bottom, river dirt from the pile Mom wants to get rid of and potting soil. Two different varieties of Morning glories, one on each corner of the deck. They are going to climb down instead of up, but they should do pretty well. I have always had pretty good luck with glories. I nicked the seed coatings and I am letting them soak overnight and will set them out tomorrow.
One variety is a dark purple, Star of Yelta and the other is a light purple brushed with white, named Flying Saucers.
I just hope that the weather stays cool enough that I can stand to get it all done before the heat sets in. Good for tomatoes, bad for Tracey. LOL
You can check out all kinds of great stuff at the link listed above . . . I look and then buy at Wal-Mart because it is cheaper for the seeds. If I could afford the plants, oh what I wouldn't do to have some. You have to remember that wally world doesn't carry ALL the varieties of seed, so, if you want something specialized, Burpee's is the place to go. I did buy the BEST gloves from Wal-Mart made by Burpee's, especially designed for working with wet soil. Saves at lot of hassle.
