MY BABY IS 16

Fall 1990

Early Summer 2006

Happy Birthday Joey! You are a whole 16 years old now and my how you have grown! I wish that there were some words of wisdom that I could give to you today that you would heed. I hope that we are always close . . . closer than we are now, more like when it was just you and me against the world. You will always be my baby, although, this may embarrass you, I love you more than words could ever say. Although things may be rough now, we will look back (if we don't kill each other in the next few years) and sigh and say, "Gosh, why do teenagers act like that?!?!" and hopefully you will have no regrets as to how you treated your Mom and Grandma, who only had YOUR best interest at heart. Be kind to us, we will only get older and we love you so.

So many things have happened in your short life that there is no making up for and I am so sorry for that. You have had so many things beyond our control that have happened. I can remember when you were just 6 months old and we invaded Iraq . . . I was thinking, what kind of world did I bring you into?? In '93, I watched with you on my lap, the WTC bombing, which happened in the middle of me studying for an exam at school on your MaMa's birthday. Clinton lied to us all about Monica Lewinsky and we had Bin-Laden. Then, your Ba-Ba dying, which was hard on us all. So soon after that, before we had our footing, 9/11 hit like a nuke and I am thinking, "Who is going to protect us all??" from the world now that Dad is gone and again, what was I thinking, bringing you into this crazy world because I was so scared for what the world would be when you were grown. The Columbia shuttle disaster happened, while it was probably quite a shock to you, I remember well how I felt when I was a young 15 and it happened to the Challenger on take-off (we had a snow day that day! no Channel ONE at school), with what was supposed to be the "first teacher" in space.

Well, you are almost grown and we are still in Iraq, the Middle East is at war, Israel vs. what appears to be Syria, Iran and Lebanon, there was another Tsunami in the Pacific Rim (not the one on 26 Dec 2004), Hurrican Katrina is less than a year old and once again Pampers and Huggies are making diapers that are for BOYS AND GIRLS, what a novel concept! (When you were a baby, they came out w/seperate diapers for boys and girls! LOL) Today your 16th Birthday, the shuttle Discovery, which made a historical 4th of July lift-off, landed safely this morning.

I hope that you will always have a connection to your baby sister, who is more like you than you may realize until several years from now. Strong-willed, hard-headed, smart, into everything and loved beyond words. Keep in mind that I cut my teeth on you and she will gain from that experience as a young Mom . . . don't be jealous of her for that, consider yourself a martyr for being the guinea pig, so to speak.

Again, Happy Sixteenth and remember who you are and from where you come and how much you are loved . . .

Did you notice on those two pictures the expression is nearly the same?

Hope your first baby had a happy day!
